Top Ten Best Sellers at The Hardy Geranium Nursery

At the end of each season I like to review which Geraniums have been the biggest sellers or the most popular that year. Of course, these statistics can be skewed by bulk buys of individual cultivars and how many I have in stock of any variety (I can’t always carry as much stock as I would like or in fact get hold of the all variety’s I would like) or late in the season recommendations from Gardener’s World’s Monty Don. His recommendation for G. macrorrhizum ‘Spessart’ in October last year firmly pushed G. nodosum ‘Silverwood’ out of the top spot at the last minute. Both are great plants for dry shady conditions however, the macrorrhizum species is faster to establish and therefore easier to propagate.

It’s interesting to see that, despite making the top spot in 2018, G. pratense ‘Laura’ didn’t make the Top Ten in 2019, despite restocking and selling out every time I could get my hands on her. Perhaps she’ll find her way back in this year, I’ve got lots of new ‘Laura’s putting their roots down as I type. I’m not in the least surprised the G. sanguineum ‘Elke’ and G. x oxonianum ‘Tess’ made it to the Top Ten last year. They’re both excellent plants, strong growers, easily established and flower profusely through the growing season. Nearly every order I packaged up and sent out contained one or the other of these two. Unfortunately, I have been unable to get hold of ‘Tess’ or ‘Jolly Jewel Red’ from my wholesaler for this year and due to PBR I am unable to propagate them myself, fingers crossed for 2021. Suitable alternative’s to ‘Tess’, are G. x oxonianum ‘Katherine Adele’ and G x oxonianum ‘Cream Chocolate’. A good alternative to G. cinereum ‘Jolly Jewel Red’ is G. Subcaulescens ‘Giuseppii’.
